Los-angeles History
In the time when Spanish occupation started, an expedition was made by 60 persons to the area named as Los Angeles nowadays. The group was lead by Gasper de Portola. They were camping by a river and found the place impressive with its fertile land and availability of abundant water. Father Juan Crespi, accompanied the group, gave a name of the river “El Rio de Nuestra Senora la Reyna de Los Angeles de Porciuncula”.
In the year 1771 some Spaniards founded a mission-“ San Gabriel Mission” as a center of the first community in the area.
Twelve years after the Portola’s, some settlers named “Los Pobladores” were enlisted as a company in Mexico. In 1781, from the Pobladores, 12 families came and established a community in the area, which was found by Portola. Over time the area became “Ciudad de Los Angeles” and in the date April 4, 1850 it became “ The City of Los Angeles”.
California was under Spain until 1822, after that Mexico took over. In the year 1848 the area became US territory. The county of Los Angeles was created before California was added in the union. In the year 1850, the people of this area got their rights of self-government.
