Los Angeles America’s second largest city after New York sprawls along the Pacific coast of southern California is known for its golden beaches superb surfing conditions and numerous Los Angeles movie stars. Founded by Mexican settlers in 1781 the city was given the cumbersome name of El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los angeles de Porciuncula. Over the decades the city grew from a cowtown to a Gold Rush boomtown to an oil town and oil pumps can still be seen bobbing up and down like mechanical donkeys. The turning point of the city’s fame came in the 1920s when the fledgling film industry realised that it was sunshine that was missing from their film making in New York city, today with major studios located here it is labelled the Entertainment Capital of the World.
The city divided into many districts some of the most famous areas of the city include Hollywood which is full of movie related tourist attractions and the LA’s beach district which is famous for the beaches in the city has become one of the America’s premier tourist destinations. Tourist attractions are in plenty especially the Paramount Pictures which is the Hollywood’s longest running film studios with regular guided tours and the LA’s famous Hollywood Sign symbolizing the hopes and dreams of mant Hollywood stars. Some of the other famous toursit attractions in the city are the Walt Disney Concert Hall one of the city’s most unusual buildings home to many musical events including regular performances by large orchestras and theatrical groups, the Dodger Stadium famous for the authentic game of baseball with a capacity of 56,000 spectators and a playing field famous as one of the best in the country, the Mann’s Chinese Theater designed as a replica of a Chinese Temple and has been host to numerous movie premieres in LA over the years, the Los Angeles Zoo home to thousands of animals ranging from leopards and orangutans to parrots and sea otters and the last certainly not the least is the Hollywood Forever Cemetery famous for the people buried in Los Angeles Hollywood Forever Cemetery .
The city houses some famous museums and art galleries for all ages and interest. Some of these are the Getty Museum containing collections of pre 20 th century paintings, manuscripts and sculptures and a selection of 20 th century photographs and a small array of Greek and Roman antique, the Hollywood Exhibition includes objects which are up to 2,000 years old, the African American Museum having an interesting selection of African American artworks in a range of media and visitors can check out paintings, sculptures, historical exhibits , the gallery shop and frequently rotating exhibitions and the California Science Center with interactive displays, short films and demonstrations which is a great place for the childrens, being informative enough to appeal to adults.
The art galleries- the County Museum of Art displaying extensive collections of art from around the world including Islamic art, Renaissance paintings, modern sculptures and abstract photography among other media and genres, the Museum of Contemporary Art designed by renowned Japanese architect Arata Isozaki which is a place not to be missed, the Fisher Gallery running in LA for more than 60 years and has built up a reputation with its collection of both contemporary and more traditional works, the Museum of Neon Art tracing the history of electric art nicely complementing the light displays and the Armand Hammer Museum of Art famous for the paintings by some of the world’s masters and also contains works by Monet, Cassatt, Van Gogh and Pissaro.
