It is a very famous capital. Ljubljana is a biggest city which has political, cultural and commercial centre, and it is a capital of Slovenia. With a population of around 300,000 it has the intimacy of a small town mixed with the cultural heritage and cosmopolitan feel of a vibrant city. Ljubljana did not become a capital overnight, it prepared for this for centuries. When it was still "only" a provincial capital of Carniola, it became the capital for all Slovenians in 1918, when the Austro-Hungarian monarchy collapsed. Even a good thirty years ago the trade mark of Ljubljana was its skyscraper and castle.
