About Limoges

Limoges lies roughly in the centre of France, around half way between Paris and the south coast, and about half way between La Rochelle on the west coast and Lyon in the east of the country. The city is home to around 100,000 people and is well known as a transport centre in France, as well as being a major art centre during the 17th century where a number of different techniques were created.

Limoges has been in existence since Roman times when it was founded as Augustoritum, and there are several relics from that era still in place including the amphitheatre, the roman baths, and also a number of temples. These have been well excavated and preserved to be explored by visitors.

Limoges benefited from the presence of the abbey of Saint Martial which was built in the 12th century, and which dominated the city right through until the 19th century, and organised the agricultural land in the area around the city.

Limoges itself has numerous historic buildings to enjoy during a visit including several churches and a bridge dedicated to Saint Martial. It is also a great idea to visit the botanical gardens during your stay in Limoges, especially if you are there in the summer months when the gardens are at their most beautiful.

If you book car hire in Limoges then you will have the ability to tour much more extensively around the area near the city. The location of Limoges in central France means that you have plenty of choice about the different types of things you might want to see. Clermont Ferrand around 50 miles away to the east is at the foot of the mountains of the Grand Massif, and is a stunning place to visit for a few days. In Clermont you can find the only volcano in France, the Puy de Dome, which is extinct, and also visit some of the oldest ruins in the country that date back to pre Roman times, or visit the stunning black Cathedral of Notre Dame which dates back to the 13th century.
