Locarno city is located on Lake Maggiore in the southern Swiss canton of Ticino close to Ascona. The Locarno treaties were negotiated here in 1925 and the Italian historian Marino Vigano speculated that Locarno’s castle may have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci. Ticino is a canton, part of Locarno and the official language of the city is Italian.
Locarno Attractions
Piazza Grande – the main square and on the northern side the arcade is filled with shops of art, antiques, Swiss and Italian handicrafts.
Castello Visconti – the structure is the remains of late medieval castle where the dUKes of Milan lived. The castle was severely damaged in 1518 and at present, it houses a museum Civico, which displays many Roman artifacts excavated from the area.
Santuario Della Madonna Del Sasso – on a wooden crag above the resort in the hamlet of Orselina, where only hearty and devout pilgrims can climb to the church. The church was founded in 1480 after a friar, Bartolomeo de Ivrea, reportedly saw a vision of the virgin.
Museum – the museum is located next to the church hangs masterpieces by such artists as Raphael and another masterpiece of 1870’s is Christ carried to the Sepulcher by Antonio Ciseri. The procession scene is most often described as Caravaggiesque.
Sonogno – is a village mid towering peaks in one of the Ticino’s most scenic valleys.
The Gambarogno Riviera – with Ticinese villages spread along the lake Maggiore’s left shore to the Italian border. It begins at Contone, at the foot of the Monte Ceneri and includes part of the Piano di Magadino as well as the wildlife refuge, Bolle di Magadino, in a delta formed by the Ticino River.
Centovalli Railway – scenic train operates between Locarno-Switzerland and Domodossola-Italy travels through the breathtaking hundred valleys.
Casa Rusca (Piazza Sant’ Antonio) – the 17 th century patrician residence houses the local art gallery is laid out on three levels surrounding the beautiful courtyard.
Boat Trips on Lake Maggiore – tourist can enjoy the relaxing boat trip or gliding along the water surface. Several boat trips are available from a simple crossing to the opposite shore at Ascona or Brissago, to a proper excursion including a visit to Stresa and the Iles Borromees.
