Launceston
Launceston is a city in the Australian state of Tasmania,
which is an island off the south-east coast of mainland
Australia. It’s the second largest city in Tasmania after
the state capital, Hobart and has a population of just over
100,000. The local language spoken is English and the
currency, like the rest of the country, is the Australian
Dollar.
The city was first founded in 1806 by British Army officer
William Paterson when his men set up camp and settled down
in Launceston. Originally he called the settlement
‘Patersonia’, however he later changed this to Launceston,
due to the New South Wales Governor, who had been born in
Launceston, Cornwall.
During the middle of the 19th century Launceston grew as a
city, due to the settlement’s pastoral industry and it’s
discovery of minerals at nearby Mount Bischoff. Due to the
mineral boom that occurred Launceston grew from a small town
to a city and became the second city to state capital,
Hobart.
Launceston is the tourism capital for Tasmania and has such
attractions as the City Park, where you will find an
enclosure full of Japanese Macaque monkeys, from twinned
city Ikeda, Japan. Elsewhere you can see the Queen Victoria
Museum and Art Gallery, which was established in the late
19th century and is the biggest museum outside of the
capital city, and the Country Club Casino, which has a golf
course attached.
The climate in Launceston is cool, but due to its location -
being surrounded by many hills and mountains - its weather
patterns change quickly. The hottest months are January and
February, where temperatures have reached records of 39C
recently, with an average of 25C. However, in the same month
of January the record low was 2C, so you can clearly see how
quickly the weather can change on the island.
