Las Vegas

Las Vegas is the biggest city in the U.S state of Nevada, in terms of population and land size. It’s world renowned for being a gambling and shopping resort and its main attraction is the Las Vegas Strip. It calls itself The Entertainment Capital of the World and is famous for its many casinos. It’s the 28th biggest city in the United States and has a population of around two million in the surrounding metropolitan area.

Las Vegas was a small town until 1935 when the nearby Hoover Dam was being completed. This led to the growth in the number of residents and tourists that came to the area and with the legalisation of gambling having occurred in 1931 many casinos had started to be built, with hotels attached. Fast forward 80 years and Las Vegas is packed with casino hotels.

The most popular and well known are; The Mirage, The Venetian, Caesars Palace, Bellagio, the MGM Grand, Luxor and Excalibur. All of these have little quirks and extravagant design features that make them stand out. For example, Luxor is built in the shape of a pyramid, whilst Excalibur is built as a massive castle.

As well as the attractions inside the casino hotels there are also fun things to be found outside, such as trips to Red Rock Canyon and the Grand Canyon itself. Alternatively if you like shopping then you can find several shopping malls inside and outside the hotels, such as The Shoppes at The Palazzo, which features the only Barneys New York department store in Las Vegas.

The city is surrounding by vast Nevada desert and this becomes obvious when you fly into it, as you can see nothing but darkness before the bright lights of Las Vegas appear out of sand and cactus. Due to this the city has a dusty, desert climate, typified by searing heat throughout the year, making it a tourist destination even in December and January, when it’s usually 25C. In the summer months temperatures have been known to reach over 47C, so sun cream is advised.
