
About Larnaca
Larnaca town located on the sea front, the edge of Larnaca Bay with historic charm lent by the fortress castle. Larnaca was known as Kition and legends had it that Noah’s grandson Khittim founded the first settlement at the spot. The word Larnaca in Greek means sarcophagus, which have been unearthed in this area.
The Mycenean Greeks established the town as a city kingdom in the 13 th century as a rich seaport and major center of the copper trade. The church of St. Lazarus standing in the center of the town and the tomb of St. Lazarus, who is still the patron saint of Larnaca.
Larnaca Attractions
Ayios Lazarus : located in the center of the town is one of the islands important churches resplendent with icons. The fascinating crypt contains Lazarus’s sarcophagus.
Hala Sultan Tekke : located on the edge in an oasis of palm trees is a mosque guarding the Hala Sultan Tekke. The burial place of the prophet Muhammad’s aunt Umm Haram, which is an important muslim shrine.
Kition : the old Larnaca of biblical times was one of the most important ancient city-kingdoms. The architectural remains of temples dates from the 13 th century.
Choirokoitia : the important prehistoric sites in eastern Mediterranean is the Neolithic settlement from the 7 th to the 4 th century in choirokoitia. As some parts of the site have been excavated yet it reveals the evolution of human society in this region.
Larnaca Museum : the museum located in Marina district displays treasures including sculptures and bronze age seals.

Larnaca District Archaeological Museum located in the Kalogera Square.
Pierides Museum displays private collections of Cypriot antiquities, Demetrios Pierides (1811-95).
Larnaca Fort - built in 1625 was used as a prison during the first year of British rule and at present the fort is Larnaca Municipal Cultural Center. Ayios Lazaros Church - Emperor Leo VI built the church in the 9 th century.Angeloktisti Church means built by the Angel, the Byzantine church was constructed in the 11 th century.
Chapelle Royal built by the Lusignan King Jenus in 1421 and considered as one of the most interesting structures surviving from the Frankish period.
