About Lanzarote
Lanzarote is the smallest and most northerly of the main Canary Islands. It has been inhabited for longer than the rest of he chain as a result of being the one which is closest to the coast of North Africa, and as a result, there is plenty to see and do beyond just resting on the beach if you decide to pay a visit to Lanzarote, so it’s a good idea to hire a car before you travel in order to get the most out of your trip.
The island itself is fairly small, not much more than 10 miles wide and 20 miles long. The majority of the population are concentrated along the coast, and not surprisingly this is also where most of the tourist resorts are, and this means that the centre of the island is largely unspoiled volcanic terrain and boasts some truly spectacular landscapes that can be explored either by road or on foot.
You can book your car hire with a choice of different companies before you travel to the island, and it is vitally important to compare prices before you go. Different rental companies specialise in different models and have slightly different high and low seasons, and as a result the prices can be confusing if you do not have a basis for comparison.
Most visitors to Lanzarote find that simply hiring the smallest and cheapest car isn’t perfect as it will not necessarily have the power to make driving around the centre of the island as comfortable as it would be otherwise.
Most people find that the three main areas that they want to explore during their stay are the volcanic park in the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya with its lunar landscapes of dead terrain, the main town of Arrecife and the bleak northern most point of the island at Orzola where you can watch the full force of the Atlantic Ocean crashing through the channel between Lanzarote and its tiny volcanic neighbour Graciosa
