Travel guide to Italy

La Spezia
La Spezia is a city located at the head of the Gulf of La
Spezia in Northern Italy. The city is the capital of the
province of the same name and is in the Liguria region of
Italy. The local language is Italian, whilst the currency,
like the rest of the country, is the Euro.
The city of La Spezia dates back to pre-historic times and
has been settled on for a long time. The city is well known
as a base for the Italian military and because of this it
hosts one of the biggest military industries in OTO Melara.
The city’s harbour is also widely used as a commercial
harbour into Italy.
The main attractions in the city are places like the Castle
of San Giorgio, which was originally built in 1262 and
restored in recent years. As well as this you will find
several museums to go to, such as the Museum of Modern and
Contemporary Art, the Diocesan Museum and the National
Transportation Museum. There are also a number of fantastic
shopping centres in the area where you will find department
stores and other boutiques selling high quality goods.
The climate in La Spezia is typically Mediterranean, with
wet autumns and springs and very hot summers. The hottest
month is August when the temperature has been known to reach
30C, whilst the coldest month is January when temperatures
are usually in single digits. In the summer it’s also very
humid due to the winds coming in from the sea, so it’s
advised that you wear loose fitting clothing during that
time.
