La Rochelle is a city on the west coast of France, in the Charente-Maritime department. It’s used extensively as a seaport on the Bay of Biscay and is on the Poitou-Charentes region of the country. Until the 15th century La Rochelle was the largest French harbour on the Atlantic coast. During the 12th century the main activities of the city were in maritime trade with countries such as England, the Netherlands and Spain. During the Hundred Years’ War La Rochelle became the property of England after the Treaty of Bretigny was signed in 1360, however the city’s residents expelled the English twelve years later, after the Battle of La Rochelle and kept themselves free.
The main tourist feature of the city is the Old Harbour, within the heart of the city. The whole of the old town has been preserved well and this makes it one of the most picturesque cities on the Atlantic coastline. Due to its coastal location all of the restaurants offer a wide range of fresh seafood that’s international renowned. The city also boasts one of the biggest music festivals in the country every summer, the ‘FrancoFolies’, which has been hosted annually since 1984.
Due to the warm effect of the Gulf Stream coming from North America the climate in La Rochelle is good for a coastal city. The temperatures hit their highest around July every year, with highs of around 26C, whilst the winter is relatively mild compared with other parts of France.
