La Coruna

La Coruna is a large city located in the Galicia region of northwest Spain. It’s the 2nd largest city in Galicia and is the largest city and capital, of the province of La Coruna. Due to its location on the Atlantic coast it’s a busy port and provides a distribution point for agricultural goods from Galicia. The local language is Spanish and the currency is the Euro.

Its strategic location has been exploited for centuries, with the Romans using it in the 2nd century BC, when it became an important city for maritime trade with the more Eastern European regions. After the fall of the Roman Empire La Coruna was still a port connected to several European countries, however it became less important as the city’s population got smaller and smaller.

In 1208 King Alfonso IX re-founded the city and gave it trading privileges that helped it enjoy growth in industries like fishing and mercantile trade. In 1446 John II granted La Coruna city status, which helped the city even further in terms of business. In more recent times The Great Depression and the Spanish Civil War affected the city’s economy, with the country’s economy bouncing back in the 1970s and re-establishing La Coruna as an important port.

The main attraction in the city is the Roman Tower of Hercules, which is a lighthouse that can boast 2,000 years of continuous operation. Due to this it has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city’s also well-known for its Orzan and Riazor beaches, which are very popular tourist destinations in the summer, in the centre of the city.

The city is represented well in national sports, with the main attraction being Real Club Deportivo La Coruna, who play in Spain’s Segunda Division of football. They were founded over a century ago and are famous for playing in European competition for several seasons. La Coruna is also represented by HC Liceo La Coruna, who are the city’s roller hockey team and European champions of 2011.
