
About Knock
Knock, Ireland’s National Marian Shrine located in county Mayo on the west coast and the western edge of Europe. The story of Knock began on 21 st August 1879 when Our Lady, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist appeared at the south gable of Knock Parish Church. Since the miraculous occurrence Knock has grown to the status of an internationally recognized Marian shrine.
Knock Attractions
Knock Folk Museum – the museum documents the story of the Knock Apparition of 1879 and places it in the context of life at that time. The museum includes permanent displays Religion, Fishing, Farming, Crafts, Education, Housing, Clothing and Transport.
Msgr James Horan – the collection includes the development of Knock Shrine and life and times of the late Msgr. James Horan, the builder of Knock.
Knock a Place of Pilgrimage – since the first pilgrimage in 1880, Knock has developed into a major center for national and international pilgrimage group.
Knock Basilica was completed in 1976 and covers one acre of land to accommodate 10,000 people.
The international airport is located between Knock and Charlestown to cater the pilgrimage crowd was opened in may 1986.
Pope John Paul II – Pope John Paul II came to Knock in 1979 to commemorate the centenary of the Apparition.
