Japan Travel Guide
Japan is an island nation situated off the coast of China,
in the Pacific Ocean. It’s known as the “Land of the Rising
Sun” and is made up of 6,852 islands. Most of the population
can however, be found on the four largest islands; Honshu,
Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. Japan is one of the world’s
leading economies and has the longest life expectancy of any
country in the world, this is thanks to the country’s
advanced health facilities.
The first known habitation of Japan occurred around 30,000
BC and this was followed several thousand years later by a
hunter-gatherer culture, as different tribes began to enter
the various islands. During the 16th century traders from
Portugal reached the islands for the first time, opening up
a lucrative shipping route between Japan and Europe.
In the 19th and 20th centuries the Meiji Restoration took
place in Japan, with the country adopting more Western
political and military institutions. The Restoration led to
the Empire of Japan becoming a world power, looking to
expand its influence. However, when Japan signed a pact with
Nazi Germany in the 1930s, making it one of the Axis Powers,
it eventually led to the Japanese involvement in the Second
World War, which it lost after the American bombings at
Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Since then Japan has officially
renounced its right to declare war.
Japan is a predominantly Buddhist country and the main
language of Japanese citizens is Japanese, with nearly all
public and private schools teaching English as a second
language. The island is well known for its culinary
delights, with the primary staple food being Japanese rice.
This has led to a wide range of sushi, which is the
stereotypical Japanese dish. The nation can proudly boast
the fact that Japanese cities have been awarded more
Michelin stars than the rest of the world combined.
