Mystery Park is the brainchild of Erich von Däniken, the out-there author of the 1970s best-seller Chariots of the Gods? This theme park features replicas of Aztec pyramids and space-age buildings, where virtual reality and computer technology will invite you to consider Mr Däniken's theory that human beings descended from aliens. The Alpine Garden on Schynige Platte (The Plateau) boasts over 500 types of flora. Take a cog-wheel train trip from Wilderswil to the 2100m (6889ft)-high plateau and be rewarded by magnificent views and an abundance of alpine flora. Housed in a charming 17th century residence, the Tourist Museum details how the surrounding areas opened up to visitors in the 19th century. Displays include old photos, crockery and early sports equipment. Explanations are in German but you can pick up an English summary. The Höheweg covers 14 hectares (35 acres) in the middle of town between the two train stations. Once the property of Augustinian monks, it was acquired in the mid-19th century by the hotel keepers of Interlaken, who turned it into a park. Cross over the Aare River to Unterseen, built in 1280 by Berthold von Eschenbach. Here you can visit the parish church, with its late Gothic tower dating from 1471. To see the sights of Interlaken, Matten, and Unterseen by fiacre, line up at the Interlaken West train station. Other attractions in the area include animal parks, afternoon concerts, and steamers across Lakes Brienz and Thun. During the summer, visitors can sit in covered grandstands and watch Schiller's version of the William Tell story and the formation of the Swiss Confederation.
