Ibiza (Eivissa in Catalan) is one among the Balearic Islands, situated by Mediterranean Sea, at the Spanish coast. The name of Ibiza originates from the Arabic Yabisah, meaning Landlord or Land in English. The official Catalan name is Eivissa, but in Spanish it is Ibiza (pronounced usual using Castilian variant [i'ß?i.?a], often noticeable by the English speaker.
At the time of 2nd Punic War, it was attacked by the Scipio brothers but remained devoted to the Carthage. With the Carthaginian military running out of luck on Iberian mainland, the city negotiated a positive agreement with Romans, sparing Ibiza from more demolition and let it to carry on its Punic-Carthaginian institutions through the Empire era, when it turned into Roman municipals.
Ibiza passed into the Christians by a Catalan a king in 1235. After that Ibiza had its own government but Spanish King Phillipe V abolished local governments independence in 1715.The onset of democracy during late seventies showed the way to the Decree of Independence of Balearic Islands.
