Honduras was the original banana republic countries in Central America and Tegucigalpa is the capital city. The Maya’s had settled in western Honduras at least 1000 BC at CopAjn but it was mysteriously abandoned around 900AD. Columbus had landed on the American mainland for the first time at Trujillo in Northern Honduras and named the country after the deep water off the Caribbean coast (Honduras means depths) in 1502.
The capital of Honduras situated into a bowl shaped valley surrounded by mountains, which are covered in pine trees. Tegucigalpa means a silver hill was bestowed by the Spanish, when they founded the city as a mining center in 1578 but the locals call the city as Tegus. The slow pace, natural beauty and low profile tourism make it appealing to travelers, however the country was devastated by one of the strongest hurricanes of the 20 th century in 1998.
Since then violent crimes have escalated particularly in the cities of San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa, throughout Honduras street crime is the principle concern involving armed robbery, purse snatching and pickpocketing have been on the rise.
Honduras Attractions
Cathedral – the main focus of the city is the 18 th century domed cathedral, which has a baroque interior full of fine arts.
Parque Central – the main hub of the city is located in front of the cathedral.
Honduras Buildings
Antiguo Paraninfo University – the first university in Central America was founded in Comayagua in 1632 in the Casa Cural, which now houses the Museo Colonial. The museum has religious art spanning four centuries of colonial rule.
Palacio Legislativo – is a modern building built on the stilts.
Iglesia de San Francisco – is the first church built in Tegucigalpa.
Tegucigalpa is the best to stay, which has good restaurants and on the other side of the river Comayagaela has plenty of cheap Chinese restaurants. Also Tegucigalpa, Boulevard MorazAjn and Avenida Juan Pablo II are the main nightlife areas.
BasAlica de Suyapa – is a huge Gothic basilica located southeast of city center. The Virgen de Suyapa, patron saint of Honduras is believed to have performed hundreds of miracles.
Santa Lucia – located east of the city is the old charming Spanish town with meandering lanes and a beautiful church.
Valle de Angeles – is an Old Spanish mining town has been restored to its past 16 th century appearances.
La Tigra National Park – located north of the city is one of the most beautiful places in Honduras. The 7482-hectare park preserves a lush cloud forest, which is home to ocelots, monkeys, pumas and quetzal.
Comayagua Cathedral – the cathedral is situated in the center of the town, which was built between 1685 and 1715 includes fine arts and one of the oldest clocks in the world. The clock was made over 800 years ago by the moors for the palace of Alhambra in Seville and was donated to the town by King Philip II of Spain.
The first church in Comayagua was La Merced built between 1550 and 1558 other churches includes San Francisco built in 1584 and La Caridad built in 1730.

The Stelae of the Great Plaza – portraying the rulers of Copajn and dates from 613.
The Ball Court, Hieroglyphic Stairway & the Acropolis – has beautiful carved reliefs of the 16 kings of Copajn and hot springs are one hour’s drive from the village.
Santa Rita de Copajn – has beautiful plaza and a peaceful colonial church.
