Helsinki

Helsinki

Helsinki is the capital of Finland, located in southern Finland on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, which is on the Baltic Sea. Helsinki has so many interesting attractions, sites and events that entire books could be written about it. There are museums, cathedrals, parks, a zoo, a fortress and a church as its main attractions. But there are also maritime attractions, family attractions, art, galleries, design, architecture, and much, much more.

One of Helsinki’s most famous landmarks is the Cathedral. It was designed by C L Engel and is in neoclassical style. Building work took over 20 years and was completed in 1852. The crypt of the cathedral regularly hosts events and exhibitions.

The Children’s Very Own Gallery is located in the Cable Factory and is an art gallery dedicated entirely to children.

The Helsinki Zoo, known as Korkeasaari, was founded in 1889, making it one of the world’s oldest zoos. There are around 200 different species of animals residing in the zoo as well as over 1,000 different plant species. The zoo has a shared protection programme and through this has been able to house rhinoceroses.

Helsinki is also a very interesting city to visit if you are interested in architecture. Most of the city is built in minimalistic, neoclassical style, which is typical of Scandinavian countries. Some sight you may want to see if you are interested in architecture are the central railway station, the city hall, the Finlandia hall, the Finnish National Theatre, Helsinki-Malmi Airport, Olofsburg, the Olympic stadium, the Pearl of Kruununhaka, the Riihitie block of flats, the Senate square and the National Library of Finland, to name but a few.

If you are planning a visit to Helsinki, you could choose to use public transportation. There are often debates around public transportation in Helsinki though, making it, at times, somewhat unreliable. Hence, if you want to be able to not only visit all the different sites and attractions in Helsinki, as well as enjoy some of the beautiful surrounding areas, you may find it very interesting and cost effective to hire a car. Anycarhire.com would be happy to compare all the different possibilities for you at just a click of a button.
