Heathrow History
The construction work of Heathrow started in the 1930s. It was then known as the Great Western Aerodrome. The Great Western Aerodrome and Heathrow was owned by Fairey Aviation. The facility was used mainly for aircraft assembly and testing purposes. The land site was primarily attained from the vicar of Harmondsworth. The airport was named after the hamlet Heath Row. The hamlet was put to an end to make way for the airport. The original location of it was seemingly where Terminal 3 now situated. The airport is located on the land that was entitled part of the London Metropolitan Green Belt. At the beginning, Heathrow had no commercial traffic and Croydon Airport was the primary airport for London.
In 1944 the Ministry of Air took the control of Heathrow. Harold Balfour (later Lord Balfour), then Under-Secretary of State for Air in his 1973 autobiography Wings over Westminster admitted that he willingly played the tricks to deceive the government committee. He made them affirm that a requisition was necessary in order to use Heathrow as a base for long-range transport aircraft. He proposed the base to be built in support of the war with Japan. Balfour wrote that he always intended the site to be used for civil aviation.
