Guatemala Travel Guide

Guatemala is located in northern most position in Middle America, bordering the North Pacific Ocean between El Salvador and Mexico, the Gulf of Honduras. Mostly mountains and numerous volcanoes in mountains, narrow plains and rolling Limestone plateau, cover the country.

The country was free of Spanish rule in 1821 and the most beautiful natural regions are sites of enormous archaeological importance with monuments of colonial architecture and center of traditional Indian culture.

Eco-Attraction Caves

El Peten – the limestone region with numerous caves and some with evidence of habitation during the Pre-Hispanic people. Some of the best-known caves are Ajtun Kan (the serpent), Naj Tunich and Jobitzinaj.

Alta Verapaz – also a place full of caves with some unique features and the most popular of them are Chisec, Lanquin, Esmeralda and San Juan Chamelco is located in San Miguel Tucuru.

Chuchuba – it is located in Santa Maria Cahabon and Seamay in Senahu.

Guatemala Natural Reserves

Cerro Cahui – located in the northern region of lake Peten-Itza and the dense jungle preserves the hydrological resources of the zone.

Chocon Machacas – located in the north central part of Rio Dulce’s El Golfete in Izabal is a protected area created to preserve the manatee, the largest mammal in Guatemala. There are six beautiful lakes and five streams in the reserve with is habitats different species of animals, birds and plants.

Mario Dary Rivera (Quetzal Reserve) – located in Purulha, Baja Verapaz and includes part of Sierra las Minas, the top of Carpintero hill and the Quisis Mountain. The reserve was created to preserve and protect the quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala.

Monterrico – located in Monterrico, Taxisco in the department of Santa Rosa was created as a reserve to protect the mangrove forest and sea turtles.

Guatemala Lakes

Lake Atitlan, Lake Amatitlan, Amatique Bay, Pacific Coast, The Highlands, Chocoya Bathing Resort, Pachitac Bathing Resort, Lemon Lake, Chicabal Lake, Quetzaltenango Plains, Momostenango Cliffs, Chuimekana Thermal Baths and Origin of the san Juan River.

Volcanoes

Pacaya – located south of lake Amatitlan and the small McKenny crater with boiling lava has been live since 1975.

Agua – gives a beautiful view of Guatemala and can be climbed from Santa Maria de Jesus.

Acatenango & Fuego – both are located to the west of La Antigua Guatemala and Acatenango has two cones and Fuego had one, which was destroyed in 1962 eruption.

Atitlan, Toliman and San Pedro – three majestic volcanoes surrounded by Lake Atitlan.

Pacific Coast – the coast is characterized by the volcanic black sand beaches, which are much like the beaches found on many South Pacific Atoll. The best-known beaches are located in the departments of Retalhuleu, Suchitepequez, Escuintla and Santa Rosa.
