Many will be aware of Greece’s complex and long lasting history, which dates right back to the first existences of man. Greece have been a very large empire and a very important country in the world for a long time, and while now they only seem like any other country in Europe, they were once the rulers of the world. You can see from their amazing architecture and crumbling ruins that they meant business. It is the level of skill and professionalism and organisation that lead them to gain all of the land they once owned.
Once upon a time, Greece was the capital of the world, with a massive empire that included much of Europe. This unfortunately fell to the Romans, and is really how the Romans acquired the empire that they did in the south of Europe. Then the Greeks took over a large area of southern Europe, including Turkey and the land between the 2 countries. These 2 different states lived in peace for a long time, until mid 1st millennium when a war broke out between the 2 countries.
Many Turkish people will claim things like Greek Yoghurt, Hummus and Feta cheese to be Turkish, when we know them better as being Greek. This is because at one time, they all ate the same foods and any national food that was created was created across the country. When the 2 countries split up and the was a lot of civil unrest, Greece came off better and Turkey was pushed into poverty for a short time. This was the time of the decline of Greece and it is very much the same now as it was 500 years ago. There are some brilliant ancient monuments and buildings to explore there and the history is very interesting to find out more about.
