About Gran Canaria

For many people, their first inclination on travelling to Gran Canaria is simply to lie down by the hotel pool and spend two weeks soaking up the sun without moving from their sun lounger. That’s a real shame, because Gran Canaria, the second largest of the Canary Islands has a huge amount to offer in addition to its perfect climate.

The island is largely divided into two main regions. The whole of Gran Canaria is fairly rugged and mountainous, but the north is more lush and green with relatively small and sheltered beaches providing seclusion while the south of the island is much flatter and has largely become a desert. While the island may not have the breadth of cultural influences that you see in mainland Spain due to its isolation off the coast of Africa, Gran Canaria has an interesting history and has plenty to offer to visitors of all kinds. From the smaller seaside resort towns to the comparatively large city of Las Palmas, there are plenty of different towns to visit.

The scenic countryside of the island’s centre is a good reason to hire a car from one of the rental companies who offer the service at Las Palmas Airport. You can choose from Hertz, Avis, AutoReisen, Gold Car and Europcar, and depending on your specific needs, you will find that you get the best price for any model by shopping around between the different providers.

The island is about 25 miles long and 25 miles wide, which means that you can reach nearly any other point within about an hour. From the popular resorts around the coast such as Puerto de las Nieves, you should make a trip to the island’s capital Las Palmas, which has a small market and from where you can organise boat trips that will allow you to see the island from the sea, or to go deep sea fishing. If you want to make a trip into the heart of the island, then drive out to San Bartolome de Tirajana where you can explore the volcanic scenery which make beautiful photographs.
