Girona History

Girona is an ancient city. The city is situated at the north east of Catalonia Spain. There are two major rivers named Ter and Onyar. It has a population of about 86,672. The inhabitant is called Iberians.

A Roman-built citadel is located in Girona which is called Gerunda now. Before the Moors conquered Girona it was ruled by the Visigoths. Girona became one of the countships of the fourteen in 785 when it was reconquered by Charlemagne.

Girona was declared to be a city of the 11th century by Alfonso I of Aragon. Girona was flourished by the Jews in the 12th century. But the history of the Jewish community ended in 1492 by expelling the Jews from Spain by the Catholic Kings.

Girona has been conquered seven times. In 1653 the city was besieged by the French armies in the rule of Marshal Hocquisicourt. In 1648, was besieged under the rule of Marshel Bellefonds. In 1694, under the rule of Noailles and was twice besieged this year. Mediterranean is situated at the south and east of the district. Barcelona is located at the west. The land of the district is mainly mountainous. The forests have chestnut, pine and oak. There are also an abundant number of mineral springs.
