France Driving Tips

Driving in France can be a real pleasure, the system of roads is magnificent and often provides huge sweeping views of countryside. France has nearly 25000 km to 40000 km of national highways of which nearly 6000km to 9000km are four lane super highways known as autoroutes and many of these superhighways are toll roads called autoroutes a peage. The French Government also maintains a good network of secondary national highways known as Route Nationale and the local Governments maintain local roads known as Routes Departmentales.

Traffic in France travels on the right hand side and the mininum age limit for driving is 18. Generally speed limits are around 90-110 on the red roads and 130 on the good parts of the toll roads. Town limits vary between 30 and 50 but are never higher than 50 kmph. Speed limit on Motorway in wet conditions is 110 kph and on major roads in wet condition is 90kph.

In France seatbelts are compulsory for both front and rear and children under ten years of age must travel in the rear. Motorcyclist is required to wear a helmet and these laws are strongly enforced by police road checks and you will be heavily fined in case of on compliance. Minimum documents should be carried while driving- driving license, insurance certificates and vechile registration along with the car ownership papersa and passport.
