Florida is well known for its retirement communities and is a popular destination for retired residents to live out their lives. The state is also popular with elderly and disabled visitors who like to visit the state for a vacation. To help these people, the state has adopted a number of measures designed to ensure that residents and visitors alike can enjoy their time in the state irrespective of any physical challenges that they might face.
Some of the facilities that the State of Florida offers to physically or mentally challenged visitors include:
- Temporary State of Florida disabled parking permits. Visitors can collect these in person for a small fee from the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office. This is located at 140 West Flagler Street, and Miami.
- Beach wheelchairs are available on a first-come first-served basis at many of the popular beaches throughout the state.
- Special taxis are available that are designed for disabled people.
- Many museums and galleries have audio briefings and are fitted with induction coils.
- Hotels provide chairs, toilets and kitchens that are designed especially for disabled people. Most also have lifts and ramps to allow easy access for wheelchairs.
- Miami Parks Department operates a number of programs that are aimed at physically and mentally challenged visitors and residents. These events include numerous sports and social events that are open to anyone from the disabled community.
The State of Florida tries to give everyone equal access to all of the great places and activities that they visit the state to see and do. This is not always possible, but nearly everywhere tries to comply with the legislation and tries to make visiting these attractions great for all visitors.
