The Algarve has been one of the most popular holiday destinations in all of Europe since the early days of foreign travel, and over the years, more and more of the small fishing villages along the coast have developed into resorts, each with their own unique cultures and attractions, and each appealing to slightly different markets.

Most visitors to Faro will simply travel to a single coastal resort in the Algarve, and spend the whole of their holiday enjoying the different restaurants and bars on offer, or playing golf at one of the many courses that are located along the coastal strip.

Even if you are not planning to explore the Algarve during your stay, renting a car at Faro is often a good idea. Hotel transfers from the airport at Faro to the further resorts such as Albufeiro or Portimao can be very expensive when compared to the cost of car rental, so many people choose to arrange a car for when they arrive. Having a hire car also gives visitors to the Algarve a great deal of additional freedom during their stay, and provides the opportunity to explore the coast at your own pace, rather than being restricted to organised tours that may not see exactly what you want to enjoy.

Popular day trips along the Algarve that you can do if you hire a car include the chance to visit the Costa Vincentina National Park on the Atlantic Coast which has some of the most rugged scenery in Europe, and the Formosa National Park at the eastern end of the Algarve.

Many people prefer to spend their holidays based in one of the quieter and more restful resorts such as Lagoa, which is a relaxing place to stay, and then take the opportunity of having a hire car in order to be able to spend the occasional day enjoying the more lively attractions on offer in places like Faro itself which has a number of small water parks, and is also very lively in the evening thanks to its well developed nightlife.
