About Exeter
Exeter is the southernmost city in the UK, and is the county town of Devon. While the city is well known as a major commercial centre in the north of England, it is also recognised as a major tourist town, and the entry point to the English Riviera along the south coast of Devon.
Exeter itself has a number of attractions that you would want to include in your visit, including the attractive cathedral building, the famous Iron Bridge over the River Exe, and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, which was built by Queen Victoria in tribute to her and her husband's many visits to Exeter during their reign. Exeter has been inhabited since Roman times, and there are several impressive Roman Ruins alongside the river that you can view during the summer months.
Book car hire in Exeter, and you will be able to explore the English Riviera at your own pace as it stretches along the coast from close to Exeter through picturesque resort towns that are at their best during the summer months and attract holiday makers from all over the world. The climate of the coast is better than other parts of the UK due to the gulf stream, and shelter from the coast.
The main towns you can drive through on the coast are Torquay, Torbay and Brixham, which all boast sea front hotels, white sandy beaches, and plenty of restaurants and clubs. There is a zoo just outside the town of Paignton which is popular with families, and in Babbacombe you can find an international standard marina which is regularly packed with exclusive yachts and has a real Mediterranean feel on summer evenings.
One of the best ways of seeing this part of the country is to take the coastal train service from Exeter. This railway was originally designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and formed part of his Great Western Railway project. The trains hug the coast and provide exceptional views as you make your way along the cliff side paths. There are regular steam train services along the coast that run as tourist specials in the summer, and if you are able to schedule your trip on one of these, it is well worth the additional cost of the ticket.
