El Salvador located in Central America, bordering the North Pacific Ocean between Guatemala and Honduras. The cosmopolitan city of San Salvador is the capital of El Salvador.
The country gained independence from Spain in 1821 and from the Central American Federation in 1839.
El Salvador Attractions
Joya de Ceren Archaeological Site – Joya de Ceren was a pre-Hispanic farming community like Pompeii and Herculaneum in Italy, which was buried under volcanic eruption in 600 AD. The remains provide an insight into the daily lives of the Central American population, who lived at that time.
Puerta del Diablo (Devil’s Doors) – a rock formation with spectacular views of San Salvador on one side and the Volcanoes and the Pacific Ocean on the other side. Another volcano crates is located on the other side of the city and one can almost drive up to the crater. There are several pupusa stands, the traditional salvadorean fish.
Arbol de Dios Gallery & Shop – the gallery and shop belongs to Fernando Llort, one of El Salvador’s most famous artists. The gallery displays and sells the original pieces of paintings and the shop sells shirts, books and ceramic tiles.
Catedral Metropolitana – the beautiful Cathedral is the burial place of the assassinated Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, the hero of the civil war. The rightwing paramilitary forces murdered the bishop while serving communion the day after he exhorted soldiers to reconsider the senseless killings.
Lake Coatepeque – the beautiful lake located in Santa Ana.
