Laoghaire is town where harbours are the main attraction. It has two harbours- the East Pier and the West Pier, where sailing and windsurfing goes on all year long. The piers, with their scenic beauty are also great places for walking. A concourse along the shoreline leads to a sandy waterfront called Sandycove. This has a tower called the Joyce tower (after the writer James Joyce, who set the first section of his novel, Ulysses here) overlooking the area, thus one can get a breath taking view of the piers and the roads.
The main street George’s street is lined with shops, which date back to the early twentieth century. The architecture provides quite a pleasant sight as one strolls down the street.
Dun Laoghaire has an interesting assortment of pubs that date back to older periods.
Situated near the West Pier, The Purty Loft serves not just as a high-class bar, but also as a rocking nightclub. However, making advance reservations is highly recommended, because it is very hard to find a free table during the peak hours, thanks to its staggering popularity. One of the most notable older pubs of Glasthule is The Eagle House. Another such famous old bar is FitzGerald’s, located near the Joyce’s tower. Smyths is an old fashioned place that still retains the charm of a bygone age.
