Dresden History
The name Dresden comes from an Old Sorbian word Dreždany, meaning people of the riverside forest. The city has grown up by the river of Elbe and it has a long rich history of serving as the capital and royal resident of the Saxon Kings.
The Saxon kings have ruled the city for centuries and they are the ones who well-equipped the place with rich culture and priceless arts. The emergence of the city leaves bloody trails throughout the pages of history. Thrice the city was totally doomed and destructed to ashes- but like the legendary bird of Phoenix each time the city was born out of her ashes.
The Saxon King August the Strong was the ruler of the golden medieval period of the history of Dresden. But this is the time when the town received the first shock of massive destruction after the Seven Years’ War. The city again was demolished during the German Revolutions in 1849 with the May Uprising. After nearly 100 years when the city has well revived after the previous shocks bombardment during the Second World War again wiped off the life from the city.
However, the true spirit of Dresden didn’t let it stray in ashes- the city was rebuilt more glorious than ever.
