About Dresden

Dresden was founded in 1206 is a metropolis of unique art treasures and lively culture. The city faced the maximum destruction in the bombardment by the allied forces in 1945 2 nd World War. The city is also the center of German Baroque par excellence and includes the magnificent palatial building around the Theaterplatz and the Bruhl Terraces.

Dresden Attractions

Frauenkirche – Germany’s greatest church of Our Lady was destroyed after the allied bombing raid in 1945 during World War II. The mighty baroque church had stood a three-day bombing during the seven years of war and the church is still under construction, which is stated to be completion by 2006. The sandstone façade is restored and a golden cross is shining above the new cupola.

Zwinger – the masterpiece was built in 1719 modeled after Versailles by Augustus the strong, who was also the king of Poland. The artful symmetrical complex of buildings holds a collection of museums, which was completely destroyed in the 2 nd World War.

Semperoper – the popular Semper Opera House saw the premier of Richerd Wagner’s Rienzi, Der Fliegende Hollander, Tannhauser, Richard Strauss’s Salome, Elektra and Der Rosenkavalier. The local architect Gottfried Semper built the opera house in 1838-41 in the Italian Renaissance style.

Albertinum – the imperial structure houses Germany’s great galleries name for the Saxon King Albert, who converted the royal arsenal into a home for vast collections in 1884. The collections include art, precious jewellery, the famous Green Vault, 16 th to 18 th century treasures and priceless porcelain.

Altmarkt (market square) – the broad square and the surrounding streets are the true center of Dresden. The square’s colonnaded beauty of the Stalinist era architecture of the early 1950 survived the idea of city planners, who wanted a car parking area at the square.

Schloss Pillnitz – the palace was built in 1720 as a summer retreat for king Augustus the strong is surrounded by a landscape garden and two smaller palaces, the Wasserpalais and the Bergpalais. The buildings were designed in Germany’s late baroque faux-Chinese pagoda style and at present it houses the Kunstgewerbemuseum.

Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden – the museum is unique in itself with the country’s excessive tendency for cleanliness, relates the history of public health and features special art exhibitions.

Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister – the museum has priceless treasures, the reproduction of Raphael’s ‘Sistine Madonna’, Vermeer’s Girl at a Window Reading a letter, Rembrandt’s Rembrandt and Saskia and Liotard’s Chocolate Girl.
