The town was later enlarged continuously by its following rulers. The town gained the title of a city in the year 1431 by King Juan II.
Battle of Vitoriaof the Peninsular War is of great significance in the history of Vitoria-Gasteiz. A monument in the memory of this battle is located at the main square of the city. The monument is known as Monument to Independence. The city of Vitoria in Brazil has been named as an honor to the Vitoria of Spain.
In the following times Vitoria has been through many important events. These events include the formation of the Institute of Media Education in 1843 and Vitoria becoming the capital of Basque Country in 1980.
