The town of Marbella was founded about 1600 BC by the Romans according to the historians. They called this place Saldub meaning Salt City. The Archeologist have found the remains from that period like the Villa Romano de Rio Verde and Bovedas, which were of the 3^rd century BC.

History reveals that the Muslims arrived to this part of the world in the first decade of the 6^th century and named it Marbil-la. A fortress was built by them in the style of the Damascus caliphate and a defensive wall was built around it to protect it from the attack of Christian forces. The catholic monarchs took over the town from the hands of the Muslims, when Mohamed Abuenza was defeated by King Fernando.  From this point of time the town was renamed as Marbella.

After the conquest of this place by the Christian, this place started to grow by developing its farmlands and the production from agriculture. They built new houses and residential districts all through the town. But till the end of the 18^th century the town consisted of only 820 buildings out of which many remained empty.

The San Louis fort was constructed by the Christians in 1725 to protect the inhabitants from Mediterranean pirate raids.  This fort was later damaged by the French during their retreat at the end of the peninsular war.

During the 19^th century Marbella expanded beyond the old monuments of the town. New constructions like bridges and roads were constructed. Modern machinery and new industries were witnessed, though agriculture remained to be its main source of income.

The town started to take it present shape after the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). After the 1940s the tourist started exploring this place and later beacame a great tourist destination. Businessmen like Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe started constructing hotels and resorts because he could sense that this place would convert into a great attraction for tourist.

In a duration of just 50 years the place was completely transformed. The place which was just a small farming village was now converted to an international tourist destination, and this was due to its beautiful climate and its golf courses.
