History of Bilbao

Bilbao is the busiest and largest city of northern Spain. Bilbao was a tiny village with a tiny port where fishermen lived. The name of the city was derived in 1300 by the lord of Vizcaya because of its commercial and maritime importance. During 15^th and 16^th century the economy of the city started to grow and became the most important economic center. The city was shook by the fire and by three floods which badly destroyed the church and major buildings of the city. 17^th, 18th, 19th century shows the constant increase in city’s wealth. Bilbao’s economy was totally disturbed during 17^th century and later the city gradually and slowly started to grow.

In Franco’s dictatorship the industrial sector of the city became wealthy and thousands of people became interested to invest in the industrial sector of the city. In 1983 heavy disasters and floods destroyed the city and causing great damage in the entire part of the city.

In 20^th century the city started to regenerate and renewal of the city begun.
