Limerick was granted its first charter at the end of that century by King Richard. The King John’s Castle on the island was ordered to be built by the King John and completed in 1200. Limerick prospered under the Norman rule as port and a trading post. Due to its strategic location, Limerick was under siege many times during the civil wars of the 17th and 18th centuries. Oliver Cromwell besieged the city in 1651. William III of Orange laid siege to the city twice at the end of the 17th Century. He finally defeated the Irish confederation in 1691 when the famous Limerick treaty was signed using the treaty stone for a table. Car is the best option to get around in the city.
