Limerick is steeped in history. The city is situated along the banks of River Shannon and an island on it is a part of the County Limerick. The island is the beginning of Limericks long checkered past. Marauding Vikings captured it from the Irish in the 9th century and made it their stronghold in the area. They held on to it till the 11th century when Irish took it back from them. Limerick gained prominence when the Normans conquered it. Limerick developed into a major settlement under the rule of Normans. The historical monuments in the present day Limerick date back to the Norman rule. King John’s castle and the Cathedral of St. Mary were built during this period.

The Treaty Stone displayed on a plinth in the city is a monument to the great wars of the 17th century. Oliver Cromwell attacked Limerick and besieged the castle in 1651. The great William of Orange did it twice in the 1691 to subdue the Irish Resistance who had taken over the castle. The famous treaty of Limerick which confirmed English dominance of Ireland was signed and the stone used as a table for the act.
