Limerick is one of Irelands best known tourist destinations and the third largest city. The city is a 15 minute drive from Shannon airport which provides international connections to major cities in Europe and United States. Situated on the banks of the Shannon River, the city is a mix of old world charm and modern amenities. The architecture is mix of Norman and Georgian styles with some modern buildings thrown in. The city is a growing tourist destination and have developed infrastructure to cater to the spectacular tourist inflow in the recent years.

The known history dates back to the ninth century when Vikings made it their stronghold. The Irish could take it back only in the 11th century. The Anglo Normans under King John, Lord of Ireland captured it in the 12th century and the whole area witnessed a sea change. Due to its strategic location on the river, it had been a stage for many battles and sieges. Scots occupied it in the 14th century and held for three years. During the 17th century civil wars the city was besieged by Olive Cromwell and William III of Orange many times. The city and its inhabitants were laid to waste by a famine in the 18th century.

There are many tourist attractions in Limerick. King John’s Castle on the King’s Island was built in the 12th century. St. Mary’s Cathedral built in 1168 is the oldest surviving historical edifice in Limerick and has a complete set of Misericords, the only church with one in whole of Ireland. The Hunt museum has over 2000 exhibits. The most important are the 9th century Atrim Cross, a Picasso sketch and a bronze horse of Da Vinci design. The treaty stone which witnessed the end of siege by William of Orange and the Limerick treaty is now on display on a pedestal in the city. If archeology is not your thing, there are other attractions in Limerick for a tourist. There are a couple of golf course in the city, a racing track, art galleries, pedestrianised shopping districts for the so inclined. Public transport buses are available to move around the city and the area. Car is the best option to get around in the city.
