In 1831, Leopold I became the King of Belgium. He gave Belgium a constitutional power and a right to make its democracy of a parliamentarian type. From the time of Independence up to World War II, the country had two ruling parties but then, a third party added and after World War II, Belgium started flourishing rapidly. Industrial revolution took place rapidly and trade unions were established.

After this started an interesting era of Belgium’s relationship with NATO. Netherlands and Luxembourg join Belgium to form a triad group of nations known as the ‘Benelux’. Due to the intimate relationship developed with NATO, Belgium now is famous for hosting many of the meetings of NATO (the headquarters of NATO are in Belgium) and the committee sessions of the European Parliament also take place in Belgium.
