Derry

Northern Ireland's Dublin is familiar to many, but the second largest city, Derry (known as Londonderry in some circles), is not so well known, but well worth a visit.

Northern Ireland obviously has a rich history filled with a lot of trouble and strife, but this makes a visit to Derry all the more fascinating.

Derry is alternatively known as Londonderry. This has religious overtones with one side insisting Derry is the correct name and the other using Londonderry. The local council has changed their name but so far have been unable to officially change the name of the city. Some residents of Northern Ireland feel so strongly about the issue that they have taken to changing road signs to remove the London part of the name from the road sign.

Derry itself is a very common name in Ireland proper. A number of towns bare the same name and over fifty smaller locations too. Road signs will actually usually display the Derry name, with the Irish equivalent presented above it.

Derry itself is not the prettiest city to look at, but it does have a lovely riverside location and enough history that you can get lost in the past for many hours.

The local Irish pubs are a must see to soak up some local flavor. You are bound to be welcomed into the city by the locals on your first visit. It is a good idea to ask around with some locals first to see which pub would be most suitable as each pub is quite particularly about their clientele. The music scene is strongly connected to the local pubs and the live performances are particularly good.

The local airport is the City of Derry Airport which is about 8 miles (13 kilometers) from Derry itself. From there, it is easy to get a flight to Dublin or across the shore to London, Glasgow, Liverpool and the Midlands.

Derry is a lovely area to travel around and explore with plenty of scenic countryside to enjoy once you get outside of the city. Anycarhire.com can help with finding a competitive deal on car hire in Derry.
