About Corfu

Corfu, the second largest island situated in the north side of the Ionian Sea at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea. The islands of the Faiakes are one of the most beautiful islands of Greece and are an ornament of the Ionian Sea.

Corfu Attractions

Archaeological Museum : though the museum is small it includes some ancient artifacts a stone lion dating back to around 575 BC found in the nearby Menekrates tomb, along the waterfront just down from the museum. The large room with the finest examples of Archaic temple sculpture, the pediment from the temple of Artemis(located south of Corfu town and dates back to 590 BC.

Old Ford (Paleo Frourio) : the two peaks Koryphi in Greek gave the modern name to the town and island, the promontory was the main town. The Venetians dug the moat in the 16 th century to hold off several attempts by the Turks to conquer the outpost of Christianity. The Greek temple at the south side is in fact an 1830 British church.

The Petrakis Line : this line offers several single day excursions to destinations including Albania, Kefalonia and Paxoi. The excursion to Albania at present has become popular and does not extent the trip to the capital, Tirana. On Kefalonia, visit the Melissani Grotto and the Drogarati cave and not to Argostoli.

Museum of Asian Arts : the museum building of neoclassical architecture was built between 1819 and 1824 to serve as a residence of the Lord High Commissioner, the British ruler of the Ionian islands. To house the headquarters of the order of St. Michael and St. George and provide the assembly room for the Ionian senate. The building was handed over to the king of Greece when the British turned over the Ionians to the Greeks.

The Kalypso Star : the glass bottomed boat that takes small groups on trips offshore and provides a fascinating experience.

The Museum of Solomos : the house of the national poet, where he lived in and was inspired by. The museum includes his personal possessions his furniture and photographical and historical material of his life.

The Tower of Nerantziha : the tower stands behind the cemetery and is part of the ancient wall of the 4 th century, which was preserved because the Byzantine church of Panagia was located here.

The Monument of Menekratis : the round stone building with a conic roof and a inscripted slab which reads from the right to left and states that Meneokratis was the consul of Corfu in Oianthia in the 600 BC.
