The city's large student population guarantees an active, sometimes raucous, nightlife. You'll find the bars around the Sé Velha and its square, Largo da Sé Velha, packed with students, professors, and locals, who drink, gossip, and discuss academic priorities. My favorite experience is hopping randomly from bar to bar.
But unfortunately the majority of nightlife that exists in Coimbra takes place at the top of the hills that enfold the city. You can hire a car in Portugal and drive to the foot of the hills, and then get geared up for some exercise. Apart from that there are a number of bars in Coimbra, and you can use a car from Coimbra car rental to drive up to a good bar for an enjoyable night out. The local people are quite friendly and patiently direct you towards night spots that stay open till very late. There are some clubs that even stay open till as late as 9:00 a.m. So rent a car in Coimbra to drive away from your dull nights… into a realm of enjoyment!
