Coimbra is in Portugal and is about an hour’s travel from Porto and two hours from Lisbon. As far back as Roman times it was called Aeminium and was then occupied by the Moors in 711 and Ferdinand I of Lyon in 1064. It flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries during the period known as the Age of Discovery. The 19th century was a time of invasion during the Peninsula War but Coimbra fought back and defeated Andre Massena in 1811.

The New Cathedral of Coimbra was built in the 17th Century and has become a popular tourist attraction. There is also the Machado de Castro Museum which has many examples of fine painting, textiles, jewelry and ceramics. Outside Coimbra there are palaces dating back to the 17th and 19th Century and there are also the Roman ruins in Coimbra. Further afield is the holiday town of Figueria da Foz which has a 16th Century fort.

There are plenty of parks and open spaces and children will always find somewhere to play. The Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra is the 5th oldest in the world and is the most famous park in Coimbra. By travelling outside the center there are mountains and rivers and for visitors who enjoy the sun there is a beach at Palheiris do Zorro.
