In 1796 Cleveland was created when Connecticut’s Western Reserve was split into townships. The leader at the time was General Moses Cleaveland and it became a city in 1836 being called Cleveland. Erie Canal gave the city a link to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico due to a link with the Mississippi River. Up until the 1960s Cleveland was well known for heavy industry but nowadays it is better known for its tourism industry.
There are four parks in Cleveland meaning that there is plenty of scope for peaceful walks and lots of greenery for relaxation. To see the biggest collection of monkeys there is Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. There is a University and medical sector while the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is also not far away. There are many festivals throughout the year and they represent the different settlers such as the Cleveland Asian Festival and Harvest Festival for the Slavic population.
For lovers of A Christmas Carol there is a museum dedicated to the costumes and photographs relating to the films. For children there is a children’s museum that allows children to learn by getting involved and there is Lake Farmpark that is a working farm where visitors can learn about the animals and the products produced on the farm. For those with an interest in the history of WWII they will enjoy a visit to the submarine The USS Cod.
As with many places in the United States, Cleveland has its roads set out in a geometrical pattern meaning that driving for foreigners is not always difficult especially with sat nav.
