
Chicago History
Like any other city of the world the city Chicago has also got a glorious past. For the people who lives in Chicago or for those who are interested about the city, the history of Chicago is obviously something to be explored. The name ‘Chicago’ was originated from the French word shikaakwa. The meaning of the word shikaakwa is wild-leek. At first the word Chicago was used for naming the river, later the city was also named after the river.
Potawatomis were the early inhabitants of Chicago who started living there taking the place of the Fox and Sauk people in the 18th century. The first settler in Chicago was Haitian Jean Baptiste Pointe du sable, who came to the city in the 1770s. He got married with a potawatomi woman. Since its origination the city of Chicago grew at a rapid pace. In about forty tears the population of Chicago grew from 30000 to 1000000. in the next 4 decades the population of the city grew three folds to a population of over 3000000. at the end of the 19th century Chicago was the 5th largest city in the world in terms of population. From 1848 chicago became a major transportation hub between the eastern and western part of the country. In 1855 chicago developed the first sewer network in the U.S. in 1871 one third of Chicago was destroyed in the great Chicago fire.
