
Cardiff
Cardiff the capital of Wales was an important sea trading hub of the 20 th century, it housed the greatest coal shipping ports in the world. At present it has many modern industries, services and retailing business. The internationally acclaimed BBC ‘s studios are located here, it also centres the broadcasting of Welsh language. The city’s growth started with the building of docks which include the Penarth and Barry in the 18 th century by the 5 th Marquess of Bute.
The residence of the Marquess of Bute until 1947 was the Cardiff Castle, built in the 1090 century on the site of Roman Fort. The castle was partly destroyed by Owen Glendower in the 14 th century and used to imprison the DUKe of Normandy. The National museum of Welsh, the Law Courts and the city Hall are located in the Cathays Park.
The old and historical docks of Cardiff Bay are used as multipurpose cultural centre. The centre of learning, university of Welsh, botanical garden, Llandaff (medival cathedral) and the Parish church of St.John dates back from 13 th century.
The Marquis of Bute II after building Cardiff’s first port insisted that for trading all coal and iron ore will use the Cardiff port, which made the port busiest in the next 100 years.
