Canary Island History
The Canary Islands, an autonomous society of Spain, is a cluster of islands at the Moroccan coast. There are 7 major islands. The islands are: La Gomera, El Hierro, La Palma, Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. People living there use Spanish as their language. There are two capital cities in the community, both with equal status, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
They have an incredibly interesting and exciting history. When the Europeans first entered the Islands, they found the islands to be inhabited with people, called the Guanches. Many of them were executed in the wars with the Spaniards, and those remaining adopted Spanish lifestyles. So many battles were fought to take the possession of the islands and finally Spain took over. After this Spanish conquest, again lots of encounters happened against the pirates. Most recently Morocco has become interested in them.
A lot of Europeans became settled there after that Spanish conquest. Spaniards and Portuguese, Maltese and Belgians were the early to be settled.
The Canary Islands are very much admired to the tourists for having nice long beaches and temperate climate. Also famous for local, exotic fruits like bananas and papayas. People of La Gomera have a kind of whistle language that the children learn at school.
So, tourist! Do not waste your time to visit these wonderful Canary Islands.
