The Canary Islands – Canarias in Spanish – are just off the coast of Africa. Although classed as part of the European Union they are only 100km away from Morocco. There are 13 islands in all and the natives are considered to be Spanish. They were of vital importance to the Spanish Armada as they were used a stopover place due to them having the easterly winds that were needed to send the ships on their way to the New World.
