Cairns

Cairns seems to offer something for many people as it combines wonderful scuba diving areas with large and amazing rainforests and it also a city steeped in culture. It is ideally located for a stopover or start point for trips to the Great Barrier Reef. Named after William Wellington Cairns there were once gold mines and it was due to the discovery of gold in 1876 that Cairns was officially founded. Once the gold rush ended it seemed as if Cairns would fall into obscurity but it was chosen to be a major train station meaning it could easily be linked to the final destination of the tin and timber that passed through.

Cairns Location

Cairns is linked to Brisbane by the Bruce Highway that stretches for 1,056 miles and to Mossman by the Captain Cook Highway that is 47 miles long. The Bruce Highway will become a motorway and then it will be even easier to get to and from Brisbane. Just north of Cairns is the Kennedy Highway leading to Kuranda and then on to the Cape York Peninsula. As a result of this infrastructure it is easy to opt for car hire in Cairns rather than depend on public transport. By visiting www.anycarhire.com it will be easy to choose the car you need and arrange the place where you want to pick it up.

Places to Visit in Cairns

Cairns is a good choice for both the sports lover and those interested in history. It is a great scuba diving location and more adventurous visitors choose to go white water rafting. The Promenade is the base for most of the restaurants and is an ideal place to go after a day’s sightseeing. The Cairns Museum has been showing life in gone by Cairns since the 1950s and sells gifts including those made by Aborigines, while the Doll and Bear Museum will be of interest to younger visitors.

Having hired a car it will make it easier to visit some places such as the Ben Cropp Shipwreck Museum and sights in nearby Gordonvale and Yarrabah.
