About Cagliari
Cagliari is the capital of the island of Sardinia, and although it is a part of Italy, the island is sufficiently far away from other parts of the country that it has developed a completely separate culture that is closer to that of France than Italy, and is at the same time very laid back and warm, making the island a great place to visit on a holiday where you want to experience something that you will not see anywhere else in Europe.
Sardinia offers exceptional beaches, ancient cities, and plenty of rolling countryside to explore. It is a country that is close to nature along the coasts, and which has developed a strong relationship with its local cuisine that makes Sardinia one of the best places to enjoy really fresh food during your stay – especially if you’re lucky enough to eat out in one of the rural restaurants in the north of the island where the food can be same day fresh, and is consequently very tasty.
The main tourist areas of Cagliari are to be found around the cathedral and along Via Roma in the centre of the city. It is here that you will find most of the modern shops, galleries and museums that you might want to explore. On the outskirts of the city centre, you will find some of the many ancient ruins that have been preserved such as the Necropolis of Tuvixeddu which dates back to Greek times and has been fully excavated to give people insight into how people lived at the time. The Stampace or old district of Cagliari is one of the best tourist areas with plenty of small unique shops to explore and browse through.
If you book car hire in Cagliari, you get the freedom to explore a little more of Sardinia than you might otherwise. It’s a great idea to drive north to Oristano, which is about mid way along the west coast. There you will find some of the best beaches on Sardinia, and a harbour front where you can relax and watch the sun set in the evening over the calm waters of the Mediterranean.
