Bulgaria Driving Tips

There are over 8000 miles of roads in Bulgaria that link the major city centers and the quality of the roads are generally good. Traffic in Bulgaria travels on the right hand side and overtaking is on the left hand side. Trams always have priority and pedestrians have the right of way in Zebra striped crosswalks. There are no toll highways in Bulgaria and fuel stations are along the main roads every 10 to 15 miles and most of the fuel stations are opened from 6 am to 10 pm with some of the fuel stations in Sofia opened 24 hours.

The minimum age for driving in Bulgaria is 18 years and a valid international driving licence is required. Seat belts are compulsory in this part of the country both in the front and the rear seat and childrens below the age of 12 are supposed to sit in the rear seat with seat belts fastened. Parking is on the right side of a one way street, blue zone parking is in effect in many built up areas and tickets are used instead of discs.

The speed limits in Bulgaria in the city is 31 mph to 50 kph, on major roads 50 mph to 80 kph and on motorways it is 75 mph to 120 kph. Overspeeding is penalised so check your speed while driving and fines are collected on the spot. Driving licence, insurance papers, registration papers and proof of ownership along with your passport is required while driving. Avoid driving in the dark especially in the rural areas and headlilghts should be used half and hour before sunset and half and hour before sunrise and drive carefully in the wet and windy weather as it is very dangerous and if possible stop and wait for the weather to settle down. Consumption of alcohol while driving is a crime and the blood alcohol limit is 0.25% and if tested and found more than the limit will result you in severe criminal penality so it is advisable not to drink and drive.
